You could add Brendan Gleeson to pretty much any movie and it would be that much better. He's always tuning up in small roles and occasionally a stellar leading one and John Michael McDonagh's The Guard looks like it may well fit the latter.

Gleeson stars as Sergeant Gerry Boyle, a boozing and womanizing Irish policeman with a big mouth who is teamed up with an uptight FBI agent, played by Don Cheadle, who has been sent to Ireland to investigate an international drug smuggling ring. There's definitely quite a bit of potential here as both actors have great sense of comedic timing and though I'm not familiar with writer/director McDonagh’s work, attracting these actors suggests good things from his script.

But we have a little more to go on that faith that this will be funny. The film played at Sundance earlier in the year to positive reviews and just before its screening at the Edinburgh film festival, a trailer loaded with a number of zingers has emerged. It didn't have me laughing out loud but I did giggle at a few of these one liners and am hopeful the movie will deliver on the promise relayed by the trailer.
