Marina Antunes [Celluloid 06.17.11] Canada movie trailer news drama

When I mentioned up-and-coming Quebecois directors, I didn't include the Oscar nominated Denis Villeneuve (of Incendies (review) fame) or Jean-Marc Vallée whose debut feature C.R.A.Z.Y. made quite a splash a few years ago (and led him to his first English language feature), because they're not really up-and-comers; they've arrived.

Villeneuve's next project is still in the distance but for his follow-up, Vallée is returning to his roots. Back in Quebec with a script he penned, Café de flore caused quite a bit of ruckus when the poster, seen right, made its way online a few weeks ago. I was pleasantly surprised to see that a new film from Vallée is a bit of an "event" in the arthouse circles. Time to stir things up a little more.

With a theatrical release in Quebec due in September (post TIFF), a trailer has appeared for Café de flore and its, as expected, gorgeous. The films tells two separate but parallel stories: one focuses on Jacqueline, a single mother in 1960's Paris who sacrifices everything to raise her son alone while the other settles in present day Montreal with Antoine, a recently-divorced, successful DJ dealing with the aftermath of an ugly divorce. Vallée says the two stories are "connected in profound and mysterious ways" and I don't doubt it, the trailer certainly suggests good things to come.
