After his 2006 Climates, Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan seemed ready to make some big insteps on the international film stage. I was disappointed by his 2008 follow-up Three Monkeys which carried on with Ceylan's striking imagery but lacked the emotional power of Climates but it looks like this year Ceylan is returning with another must-see film. The Grand Prix ex aequo winner at this year's Cannes (an honor he shared with the Dardenne brothers' The Kid with a Bike), Once Upon a Time in Anatolia is looking like an unmissable film film.

Described as a ""metaphysical road movie" and also an unorthodox crime drama focusing on a group of men who, on a dark and blustery night, search deserted roads of southern Anatolia for a corpse," the trailer for Ceylan's latest is a wordlessly haunting one with overtones of a moody thriller: thunder, howling wind, deserted country sides and gunshots in the distance, all accented by frequent Ceylan collaborator Gökhan Tiryaki's gorgeous cinematography.

Once Upon a Time in Anatolia is currently making its way through the festival circuit.

Trailer after the break.
