With so many films in competition and screenings in various sidebars at festivals you're always likely to miss a little gem. This is one that completely passed under my radar when it played at Cannes earlier this year.
The directorial debut of Michael Haneke's casting director Markus Schleinzer, Michael is the sort of low-key poignant drama that's bound to rustle feathers. Though apparently much more blunt than Haneke’s work, Scheinzer's film takes a cold, remote and straightforward approach to the story of an insurance company employee who shares his life, forcibly, with a 10 year old boy. I'm sure there's some sexual dysfunction at play here – why else would a grown man have a boy locked in his home?
Trailer after the break.
The premise is rather vague but when you take a look at this trailer, it's clear that Michael, the titular character, is a severely disturbed man. I love the obvious markers that nothing here is as idyllic as it appears from the outside and the ending of this trailer is pretty genius. I definitely want to see more though I'm not holding my breath for any amount of entertainment from this picture.
