Everyone knows I'm a huge Stephen King nut, but not so big that I knew about the Carrie musical until today. Might have something to do with the fact that I loath musicals and avoid live theatre at all costs, but I guess Carrie: The Musical ran on Broadway in 1988 for about five performances, so no it wasn't a huge success.

The story, adapted of course from Stephen King's first big 1973 hit novel "Carrie," focuses on an awkward teenage girl with telekinetic powers whose lonely life is dominated by an oppressive religious fanatic mother. Francis X. Clines, in The New York Times (March 2, 1988) noted that Carrie is "Mr. King's carmine variation on Cinderella". I personally don't see it.

I read up on the musical and it seems that, like Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark, the production was fraught with problems, the least of which was that buckets of blood on microphones don't mix.

You know what else I discovered? For all of us that missed it on it's momentus first run, Carrie the musical is coming back! Yup, it has been confirmed that MCC Theater will stage the musical based on the Stephen King novel as part of its 2011-2012 season under the direction of Stafford Arima (Altar Boyz, Tin Pan Alley Rag, Somewhere in Time, London's Ragtime). MCC has not announced dates of productions for its full season.
