I love this these types of movies, the types that even after some video and a synopsis, you're still not quite sure what to make of it.

In the case of Ákos Badits's Juliska some of that confusion may have something to do with the fact that the synopsis for the film reads like a badly translated synopsis but alas, that's all we've got to go on because the teaser, as fabulous as it is, doesn't provide much more.

Once upon where there was a squashed worm drying, where the surreal slapstick comedy and folk tale lived together, there lived a beautiful maiden whom you may know by the name of Juliska. Smouldering forest, inviting violin tune, crone's curse and its terrific house, sorrowful prince locked away in a tree, who can only be saved by the beautiful girl.

Reading that and watching the video a few times, I'm assuming this is a dark tale on a fairytale-like story of a girl who saves the day. What's certain is that the poster is intriguing as is the trailer which is outstandingly cut to some rather interesting violin music.

I have little idea what this is about but am definitely curious. The eight minute short has been making the rounds of small European festivals where it's already picked up an award for cinematography. Hope it makes its way into the North American festival circuit.

Kudos to Avery for bringing this one to our attention.
