The first time I heard of Albert Sanchez Pinol's "Cold Skin" was with a news release that UK director David Slade of Hard Candy and 30 Days of Night fame had been tapped to direct the thriller. I'd assumed Slade was still attached to the project but it looks like a few things have changed since the project was announced two years ago and regardless of the fact that Slade was the producer's first choice to step behind the camera he is no longer attached to the project.

News now is that Xavier Gens of Hitman, Frontiere(s) (review) and most recently The Divide (review) will be at the helm of the $23 million dollar psychological thriller.

Pinol's book is reminiscent of the story and setting of 30 Days of Night but features another type of monster all together. It tells of a man who takes a job logging wind conditions on a tiny Antarctic island. Upon arrival, he discovers that he has a reclusive neighbour and that at night the island is "overrun by humanoid killer amphibians."

I'm a big fan of Slade's and was looking forward to his take on the story and though I'm disappointed he is no longer involved, I am thrilled that Gens, another director I like, has taken over the reins. Hopefully this new announcement also means the film is finally headed into production.

Sounds a bit like Island Life by William Meikle.
