If film school grads are pumping out animation at this breathtaking level, I can only imagine what they'll achieve when they're given the reigns over a large production. The wow factor this time around comes at the hands of a group of young directors who worked together on a graduation film for l'école Georges Méliès.

Directed by Guillaume Bergère, Guillaume Coudert, Maria Glinyanova, Bruno Guerra and Charlotte Jammet, Wind Mills tells the tale of a young girl who lives in a dark and dreary world with her father. "Despite her father's renunciation and despair facing the death of his wife, [his daughter] maintains their dream of building a machine powered by magic winds to fly and reach the sun."

Reminiscent of the visual style I first saw a few years ago with the release of The Secret of Kells (trailer), Wind Mills builds a mostly silent tale full of beauty and wonder. I didn't love the narrative mostly because I didn't fully understand what was going on but I was taken by the imagery. I wanted to see more of the little girl's dark world and I wanted to find out how things got so dark to begin with. Definitely room here for expansion on story though these seven minutes are well worth a look.
