Marina Antunes [Celluloid 11.30.11] horror drama vampires

There was a moment of gleeful joy on my part when it was announced that Neil Jordan was returning to the horror genre with a vampire tale titled Byzantium. When it was announced, the project already had Gemma Arterton and Saoirse Ronan cast as a mother and daughter team of vampires who occasionally pose as sisters as they make their deadly way through the world. But there's much more to the story than that. The play flips between a modern day setting and Victorian era when Arterton's Clara was turned. The play tells the story via one of the women in the modern setting and apparently, it's not clear if this really is the story two vampires or the over active imagination of a teen girl.

In a recent THR article it has also been revealed that Sam Riley, the talented up-and-comer who made his debut as Ian Curtis in the must-see Control, recently appeared in Franklyn (review) and Brighton Rock (trailer) and will be seen in the upcoming On the Road adaptation, has also been cast in the film which will be shot in Ireland thanks to a monetary investment from the Irish Film Board.


With Jordan in the director's chair, Moira Buffini (of Jane Eyre fame) adapting her own complicated stage play, and this great cast in place, I expect Byzantium will be a fantastic dramatic entry into the vampire genre.
