One of my favourite short stories is Charlotte Perkins Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper," a Gothic tale of a woman who is locked away in an upstairs bedroom of a house her husband has rented for the summer. He forbids her from working while she recuperates from a fictitious ailment but she secretly continues to write and the story is told in a series of first person journal entries that depict the woman's fall into psychosis and eventually, she believes there are women hiding in the patterns of the yellow wallpaper.

It's a fantastic story (which you can read here) but it had never been one I'd considered as the starting point for a film. Enter director Logan Thomas who, with co-writer Aric Cushing, have developed a script derived from Gilman's original story. The Yellow Wallpaper stars Juliet Landau as Charlotte and Cushing as her husband John, as a couple who retreat to a countryside house in an attempt to start their life over after a devastating fire takes the life of their daughter. After seeing a vision of her dead daughter, Charlotte finds solace in the house's attic room, pulling away from her husband and sister.

I really like this trailer which starts off on a solemn note before descending into music and visuals that suggest a gothic thriller. I'm always up for a good dark drama and this period thriller seems to fit the bill beautifully.
