Peter Berg is definitely channeling Michael Bay here and yeah it looks like a bit of a silly Transformers rip, but forget everything you know about the old Battleship board game because this is a whole new thing.

The first trailer set the film up as a war game between alien invaders and the navy. In this trailer it's a full blown invasion complete with alien soldiers that look like they're right out of HALO.

The Transformers series has a certain dorky factor that makes it a little nauseating at times (read: jive talkin' side kick robots or robots spewing bad evil villain dialog) where Battleship feels like a more straight-ahead action film. At any rate there's a crap load of destruction.

Synopsis:
Peter Berg (Hancock) produces and directs Battleship, an epic-scaled action-adventure that unfolds across the seas, in the skies and over land as our planet fights for survival against a superior force. Inspired by Hasbro’s classic naval combat game, Battleship stars Taylor Kitsch as Lt. Alex Hopper, a Naval officer assigned to the USS John Paul Jones; Brooklyn Decker as Sam Shane, a physical therapist and Hopper’s fiancee; Alexander Skarsgard as Hopper’s older brother, Stone, Commanding Officer of the USS Sampson; Rihanna as Petty Officer Raikes, Hopper’s crewmate and a weapons specialist on the USS John Paul Jones; and international superstar Liam Neeson as Hopper and Stone’s superior (and Sam’s father), Admiral Shane.

Battleship opens on May 18 2012.
