Marina Antunes [Celluloid 01.31.12] Canada horror comedy

Apparently we Canadians really love our zombies, especially over the last few years. First Fido (trailer), then Pontypool (review) and now Eddie (originally known as Eddie: The Sleepwalking Cannibal).

Directed by Boris Rodriguez, this Canada/Denmark co-production has been kicking around the interwebs for a while but we'd yet to see a trailer for the film which is scheduled to play the European Film Market in early February before heading onto Portugal for its world premiere at Fantasporto. Now that the trailer is hiding out there and I've seen it, I must say I'm ever more interested to see how it plays out.


Lars is a once promising artist whose career has been slipping. His inspiration is death and he refuses to paint at such a high cost but wanting to keep Lars' profitable career afloat, Ronny, Lars' long-time art dealer, arranges for Lars to take a position in a little quiet community where he can get back into painting without the violence. But as ideal as country life is, it's no picnic and when Lars meets Eddie, a sleep walker who gets violent when he sleepwalks, things start to look up for Lars (while not so good for everyone else).

This isn't laugh out loud funny but it's darn amusing and I must admit, I'm completely taken by this trailer. Part of it is the idea that Lars is only inspired by the grotesque and part of it is that this is a look at art with a zombie twist. Gotta love Canada.
