Even four years on Deadgirl is still one of the most controversial indie horror flicks in recent memory. It polarized us here for sure. I didn't totally get it, but respected it while quietearth loved it, seeing it as an outsider love story. That's the thing about Deadgirl; you can take it 100 ways and be totally wrong every time.
Creator of Deadgil Trent Haaga sees the film, about two young men who come abuse a female zombie they find tied up in a basement, a condemnation of misogyny and had plans for the second installment to offer a twist by making it about a girl.
Too bad Deadgirl 2 is dead in the water.
Here are more of his comments:
"There was some hoopla about a year ago about the fact that Deadgirl 2 was being talked about," writes creator Trent Haaga. "I'm not going to get into all of the terrible particulars that killed the project, but needless to say the outcome wasn't pretty and I don't think that a sequel will ever get made. It certainly won't get made with my participation. And it's probably the best that it remain this way."
"But I did write a script for it. I always saw the original Deadgirl as a condemnation of misogyny as opposed to being misogynous - the boys were the monsters, not the "monster" of the title. But a lot of people didn't see it that way. My idea for the sequel was to try and tell a story from the point of view of a female outcast and what would happen if she found the Deadgirl this time ... instead of using the Deadgirl for the impetus of her sexual fantasies, what if she used the Deadgirl for her revenge fantasies instead? I also wanted to put the story back into the "really small rural town" where the first one was supposed to take place (we shot the first movie in Los Angeles and while it looks a lot like "anytown," it didn't capture that economic desperation that I was hoping for ... desperation that would have added to the boys bizarre and angry choices). What I ended up writing could maybe be described as "Precious meets The Pit with a zombie attack dog."
Haaga has uploaded his script for Deadgirl 2 online for fans to get a look at. As much as I don't crave revisiting his difficult vision, it too bad to hear his deadlings to get another off the group was thwarted by bad dealings.

I never got the Deadgirl also, and I certainly would never classify it as a horror flick. The horror jacket is given to anything these days, and it’s starting to really annoy me. I’m a little surprised they’re dong a sequel, but they are also doing another Flintstone movie. Thank god decent movies are being made in Asia and Europe, I just saw The Horde a French Zombie movie I was blown away, and I'm just starting to into the genre.
