quietearth [Celluloid 02.03.12] Germany drama

My intuition says there's something profound about this film beyond it's obvious statement about society. The first feature from Jan Speckenbach revolves around a father trying to find his daughter who vanished. He follows her and many other childrens trail across the country .. but the world has changed. About to have it's premier at Berlinale, the teaser just dropped but unfortunately it shows nothing. I want more!

All of a sudden, 16-year-old Martha vanishes. Her father Lothar, who for years has had no contact with her or his ex-wife, sets off unwilling to find her. He soon realises other young people are also vanishing from the city inexplicably. Lothar follows their trail across the country. He meets the occasional young person but the trail goes cold. In the next city he encounters militia groups and a reinforced police presence. Children are forbidden to be on the streets unless accompanied by adults. The world has changed...

There’s a feeling going round Europe – and not only Europe. Something is not right about the place anymore. What if a rapidly increasing number of young people were simply to withdraw their consensus that the common sense view of the world is a market-based, economised one? What if they were to leave the older generations behind, disappearing into the distance, as in the legend of the Pied Piper, so that only when the wind is blowing from a certain direction, can the distant laughter of children be heard? From one day to the next fourteen-year-old Martha disappears without a trace. Her father, who for years has had no contact with her, embarks on a search for his daughter. He finds himself entering the poetic-speculative in-between world of missing children who are in no way victims, but voluntary deserters who have turned their backs on the firmly established world of adults.

obvious Haneke sensibilities aside, this looks a bit like a contemporary 'Children of Men' setting
