Marina Antunes [Celluloid 03.07.12] drama vampires



Looks like we're not done with teen vampires quite yet.

Word has come down from the Great White North of Saskatchewan that Canadian writer/director David Schultz is busy filming his follow-up to the coming of age drama 45 R.P.M..

Starring British newcomer in the titular role, Rufus is the story of "a lonely supernatural teenager [who] discovers what it means to be human." I realize all sorts of red flags are going up in your mind and all sorts of comparisons are flooding in but hold them for a moment because Schultz' film sounds less like Twilight and more like Shunji Iwai's Vampire which, by the way, we have yet to see.

There are few details on the 90 minute film which is still in production but the film's production page does offer a longer description:

Rufus isn't sure what he is. Hunted, poked and prodded for the last two hundred years, he knows people are always pegging him as this or that. It's all about what box you fit into. If there really are vampires, Rufus has never met one. Sure he has some quirks. Who doesn't?

Rufus doesn't sleep, eat or drink. He doesn't age or feel the passage of time. He's a boy and will always remain so. So what if he likes the taste of blood? It's not like he's addicted. Rufus can take it or leave it - most of the time.



A little more digging has uncovered that the film is a "somewhat quirky project, where light, dry comedy rubs shoulders with "very violent" scenes." Add cast members Kelly Rowan, Richard Harmon, Merritt Patterson, Merritt Patterson and Kim Coates and Rufus is looking very promising.

No video from the film yet but we have a gallery with a few photos from the film. This is looking good and I really enjoyed 45 R.P.M. so I'm expecting another good turnout from Schultz. We'll certainly be keeping a close eye on this one.
