This upcoming adaptation, based on the novel The Second Coming: The Passion of Joe Panther by Andrew Masterson, revolves around a guy who has all the traits of the quintessential drug dealer, and he thinks he's Jesus. I can't find an accurate description of the novel, but it also sounds like it might be set in a future dystopic world. So if you've read it, please chime in! It's being produced by Angie Fielder who also produced Sundance premierer Wish You Were Here and its received some funding from the Australian government. They're currently shooting promo videos and plan to go the crowdfunding route.

The official synopsis:
Joe Panther believes that he is Jesus Christ - around for two thousand years, still thirty-three and pissed-off as hell. When he wakes in an alleyway next to Gina Compton's dead body he becomes the prime suspect in a murder investigation. To save himself, Joe must outplay the draconian laws of a corrupt future society, survive a dangerous cult leader, appease the dead girl’s jilted lover and uncover who the real killer is.

The publisher's description of the novel it's based on:
′There is no god,′ I told him. Then I drove the syringe up into his nostril and straight through the side of his nose.′Joe Panther is a psychotic, alcoholic, violent, substance-abusing heroin dealer. He is also, he believes, Joshua Ben Pantera, born two thousand years ago, the son of Mary and the Lord God Yaweh Himself, not dead yet, the crucified Jesus: still around, abandoned by his Father, abused by the world, and as pissed off as hell.
