ABC is developing a new tv series based on Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which has its two main characters, now in their 20s, running an investigative firm in a steampunk New Orleans. Sounds great right? Downside: Jason Richman and David Zabel, the duo behind Detroit 1-8-7 and ER are both writing and exec producing. Someone get Joss Whedon on this!

I wonder how they'll handle the horrendous racism in the South. My guess - it'll get glossed over.

If "The Borgias" can turn Pope Alexander VI into a multi-culturalist, then I'm sure that this can turn Tom and Huck into anti-racialists.

To be honest, this sounds like a piece of light entertainment, so it will do what that has always done in simplifying and sanitising the past. After all, "CSI" or "Law and Order" are hardly paragons of gritty realism.

Sounds like a simple rework of the old Wild Wild West formula.

re: racism - they can always do what they did with the Wild Wild West movie and add a black character. Since they couldn't retool the Sawyer or Huck Finn characters without causing howls of protest, why not just drag along Jim (since bought and secretly emancipated by Tom & Huck) on all the adventures? Jim can provide an ex-slave's perspective and give the occasional token lecture on toleration and political correctness. TV networks love to insert this sort of homily in their series. It makes them feel noble - and it keeps the FCC and other watchdogs off their backs for not sufficiently stressing "family values."
