Two things I never thought I'd see together are Drew Barrymore and the apocalypse but it looks like the universe has other plans because they've met and apparently like each other enough to work together.

THR reports that Drew Barrymore has signed on to direct an upcoming drama about the end of the world simply titled The End. The story comes from TV writer Aron Eli Coleite who wrote and produced "Heroes" and "The River," and focuses on a few different people as they "reconcile their fate on Earth's last day." The key word here is "drama" so don't hold your breath for end of the world chaos. This is further being described as an "uplifting and humanistic" story and though I'm not expecting rainbows and unicorns, it doesn't exactly suggest an insightful, gritty approach to humanity falling apart.

Barrymore doesn't exactly strike as a director to take on hard hitting material but she has an eye for good stories which indicates Coleite's script may fare better than his cancelled TV shows. So far this sounds very much in the vein of Don McKellar's Last Days and though I don't expect Coilete to meet McKellar's excellence, this new project certainly has me curious.
