A pretty stellar week for home viewing all said, so take notes people. First up is silly Cuban horror comedy Juan of the Dead, which has been critically acclaimed since day one, even finding itself some praise her on Quiet Earth (review, review, review).


Ben Wheatley's controversial British mind-fuck, Kill List is also seeing some domestic love courtesy of IFC. It seems to be divisive, but it's the big release for me this week. Can't wait to see it.





I don't know, you may have heard of this one, but if you're not familiar with The Hunger Games (HA!) you can pick it up and see what all the fuss is about. I feel like Hunger Games was a little too highly praised upon release and certainly Gary Ross didn't do anything more than a passable job with the source material. You can see the seams in this one thanks to a modest budget. To compare this to Twilight as people have done is fairly dumb. Even in their basest elements, the stories are actually nothing alike at all and Katniss is a much more interesting protagonist that boy crazy Bella. A decent kids flick with ballsy concept. Nothing more.


If you've been waiting for The Raid: Redemption to come out on Blu-ray to see the ass kicking in 1080 then your time has come. This is a gritty high octane martial arts flick that will exhaust you. Glad to see it's getting a sequel. Let's see how they top this!


Another big release this week is the Blu-ray release of Spielberg's ultra profitable JAWS. Apparently the new transfer is nothing short of mind altering. Blind buy.

Kill List is one of my faves this year and it really bums me out and burns me up that the cover is so revealing. Seriously should have gone with something a little less spoilerish. If you see it totally cold the payoff is awesome. (I did)

I can’t even express how excited I am about The Hunger Games coming out on DVD on Saturday. The books just sucked me into Panem full force. I didn’t get a chance to see it in theaters so I’ve been patiently waiting. I know that the movie won’t be as good as the book but that’s ok. I tried to reserve the movie at my local kiosk but it’s not even available. So a Dish co-worker suggested trying Blockbuster @ Home which delivers the movies straight to my door. Blockbuster even allowed me to reserve a copy! How awesome is that? It cuts the unneeded trips to the kiosk and saves me some gas too. There’s a pretty big bonus attached to this movie and his name is Liam Hemsworth. I’m definitely looking forward to it. Is anyone else besides me excited for the other movies that will be coming out? This time I’ll try to make it to the theater.
