quietearth [Celluloid 08.14.12] post apocalyptic drama



I remember Robert C. O'Brien's novel fondly - it was the first PA book I've read, and according to the news from Variety, they're sticking with the books plot line, somewhat anyways. After a nuclear war, a teenage girl is left alone in a valley untouched by the decimation surrounding it, until two scientists come in from the forest. No female lead has been announced, but Tobey Maguire will play the scientist.

Craig Zobel, the man behind Sundance preemer Compliance - a true story of an interrogation of a young female employee at a fast food restaraunt which goes too far - is set to direct.


No dates, for anything, have been announced.

Not exactly sticking with the book's plot line if the Variety story is accurate when it says "two strangers wander in from the forest" That would completely change the dynamic. The BBC Play for Today adaptation - though very much of its time - is well worth watching and seems to stick closely to the original other than moving it to the UK for budgetary reasons. I read Sarah Hall's The Carhullan Army recently and would highly recommend it.

Really enjoyed the book then hunted down the "After School Special" like movie from the BBC. It seems to be common practice to reshoot movies instead of coming up with something original. It's great so many books are being turned into movies.
I wish they would do the same for such classics like Warday, Dark December, Alas Babylon.
