Put away your tablets and cell phones for a moment and take a ride with me in the wayback machine to 1982. Ridley Scott has just wrapped shooting on Blade Runner and the promotion machine is looking for ways to sell the movie to sci-fi fans. At the time, conventions were common but not exactly mainstream and without YouTube to spread the word, someone made the decision to prepare a promotional video for conventions.

The video which has been kicking around the web since last year includes an introduction from Scott and interviews with Syd Mead and Douglas Trumbull talking about the movie's design and effects intercut with set videos. Though the footage here isn't going to blow anyone's mind today, the interviews are exciting, particularly Mead's; the renowned futurist has spoken at length over the years about the design of the movie but I did find his comments on making things look like they were both 40 years in the future and 40 years in the past fascinating.

I'm also interested to know if anyone out there remembers seeing this. I'd be curious to know what fan reaction to the footage was like.

The music for this promo reel sounds, um, like porno music. Gives a different feel for the movie.
