Marina Antunes [Celluloid 09.04.12] horror action adventure



Outside of the movie's release being pushed into 2013, we haven't seen or heard much from Tommy Wirkola's Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters in some time but now, in an effort to wet the appetite, the studio has cut together a little trailer which has the entire internet abuzz.

It seems the buzz is as much about the fact that Jeremy Renner is in it (after his success with Bourne and The Avengers that's easy to understand) but there's also quite a bit of love for the fact that this is supposed to be a bloody, twisted affair with a "Tarantino feel" but if that's the case, I'm certainly not feeling it here. Admittedly, there's only so much one can show in a trailer to keep it friendly for all audiences but I don't think the problem is the missing blood but rather the fact that this trailer has no energy even though there's quite a bit of action and some heavy music for pacing. To make matters worse, this looks like a cross between The Brothers Grimm, Van Helsing and Red Riding Hood. Yikes!


That all said, I can't help but hope that the finished product is better than the trailer and judging from Wirkola's previous projects and this cast, including Gemma Arterton, Famke Janssen and the always excellent Peter Stormare, this definitely has potential. Not to mention the story, about Hansel and Gretel having turned witch hunters after their run-in with the witch, has great potential.
