One of the films that recently exploded onto the scene is Sally Potter's Ginger & Rosa. Scheduled for its world premiere at TIFF later today, the film played Telluride last week where it took critics and fans alike by storm.

Taking place in 1960s London, it stars Elle Fanning (Ginger) and Alice Englert (Rosa) as the titular characters, best friends who find themselves divided. The pair are discovering love, sex and politics but their relationship falters when Rosa "falls under the spell of Ginger's father, Roland (Alessandro Nivola), a charismatic freethinker." As her relationship with her best friend and family turn rocky, Rosa turns her attention to the growing antinuclear movement which mirrors her personal struggle.

It sounds like heavy drama and considering this comes from Potter whose works are rarely easily accessible (think Orlando), it's undoubtedly going to be hefty subject matter but for once, it also looks like a straight forward narrative which should make the subject matter a little easier to navigate through.

The newly released trailer certainly suggests good things and with the talented young Fanning leading the charge, along with Timothy Spall, Oliver Plat, Christina Hendricks, and Annette Bening in supporting roles, this is one to keep an eye on.

Ginger & Rosa plays TIFF before opening in the UK on October 12th.
