Marina Antunes [Celluloid 09.15.13] France animation thriller

It doesn't happen too often but once in a blue moon I stumble on an animated short that is perfect fodder for Quiet Earth readers. This happened to be the case on Friday when I spent the evening at SPARK Animation, a Vancouver festival and conference celebrating the best in world animation. Tucked between two very sweet and well done French films was this little gem from director Jeff Le Bars.

A recent graduate of France's prestigious L'Ecole Emile Cohl, Bars' work is very dark in both style and subject matter, a marked difference by many of the other animated shorts I've had the chance to see this year. It's impressive. Not only is Carn beautifully realized, it offers a gut punch of a story in only a few minutes. I'm very much looking forward to seeing more of Bars' work but for now, check out the incredibly impressive Carn.
