Marina Antunes [Celluloid 04.24.14] zombies horror



I'm really digging the fact that the [REC] franchise is playing lose with timelines. While [REC] and [REC] 2 (review) followed reporter Ángela as she dealt with the fallout of the infection, [REC] 3 (review) was a completely different beast that felt completely disconnected from the previous two movies. Now for [REC] 4: Apocalypse we're returning to Ángela's story, making the third movie that much more of an oddity.

Having been whisked away from the infected building at the end of the second movie, Ángela is taken to an oil tanker for examination. What no one realizes is that the young woman, Manuela Velasco reprising her role, carries with her the virus though from the looks of the trailer, she also appears to be immune.


Jaume Balagueró, co-creator of the franchise, takes his turn behind the camera, co-creator and co-director of the first two films Paco Plaza directed the oddity that appears to be [REC] 3, and it looks like Balagueró is taking the franchise forward in a new direction since for the first time, the found-footage aesthetic seems completely gone.

I've enjoyed the franchise so far and am really looking forward to this new instalment. Few things are better than a killer infection in an enclosed space. Wonder how they'll leave the door open for number five.

[REC] 4: Apocalypse opens in Spain on October 31. Expect a North American VOD release to follow.
