By this point, anyone who cares knows that Anne Rice is returning to "The Vampire Chronicles" with the release of "Prince Lestat" later this year. That's exciting news indeed. Here's what's not so exciting: reports today are that Rice has optioned the entire "The Vampire Chronicles" series including all previously published novels, all future novels as well as Christopher Rice's unproduced adaptation of "Tale of the Body Thief." From the sounds of it, the purchase by Universal also includes the titles in "New Tales of the Vampires."

Rice fans will undoubtedly rejoice. This move could well mean that movies are only a matter of time, including remakes of the previously produced two titles. What will be interesting to see is what if any say Rice will have into the projects but what really has me pickled is that Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci will be producing; popular names to be sure but not exactly a pair with a track record of great entertainment. It's not the end of the world but it's certainly disappointing.

It'll be interesting to see if there's any appetite left for vampire movies. Sure Rice is a well beloved figure but there's a reason it took so long for a sequel to Interview with the Vampire and though I'm not thrilled about the producing team, the teenager in me can't help but be gleeful at the chance to see Lestat on the big screen again.

On a side note, while on tour earlier this year, Rice mentioned she'd love to see Anson Mount (of AMC's "Hell on Wheels" fame) take on the mantle of Lestat. He's a bit old for the character but he's certainly got the right look. Hopefully Universal is listening.

The producers may be underwhelming, but with a good director, and since Christopher Rice is adapting the screenplays, the possibilities are high.

I thought Ann Rice stopped writing horror novels?

Yeah, she rediscovered the church, wrote a couple of religious themed books, had another falling out and returned to supernatural. Her werewolf series has been pretty enjoyable so far.

So, she will be able to start affording to sue anyone who uses her property (Vampires, Werewolves etc) again?
