Marina Antunes [Celluloid 04.22.15] Japan action vampires

Japanese director Takashi Miike has made some pretty weird movies in his time but his latest, the crazy sounding Yakuza Apocalypse, definitely ranks right up there with the strangest of the strange.

It's the story of a yakuza underling who discovers his boss is a vampire. Said underling is bitten, turned into a vampire and somewhere in there is a showdown between warring yakuza factions, some or both of which are supernatural creatures, and international assassins. Because what's a great Japanese gangster movie without international flare?

Our first look at the movie earlier this year pretty much summed up what we already knew: Yakuza Apocalypse is insane. We guessed that it would make the genre festival rounds before its Japanese theatrical release and likely well after but we never guessed the movie would be playing Cannes but there you have it: Miike is taking this bit of batshit weirdness to the Cannes Directors' Fortnight and it will be amazing.

It opens in Japan June 20 but Yakuza Apocalypse doesn't yet have an international release. Expect that if it plays as well as the premise and the trailer suggest, we may well see it open in North America outside festival season.
