Marina Antunes [Celluloid 07.17.15] action thriller western adventure

Alejandro G. Iñárritu may have entered the public consciousness with his Oscar win last year for the spectacular Birdman but he's been making interesting and arresting movies since pretty much the beginning of his career. What I particularly love about Iñárritu is that over the last few years, his movies have become a little more accessible – or perhaps I'm just more in touch with the subject matter. I assume it's a combination of the two.

For a big chunk of the past year Iñárritu, Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy have been camped out around Calgary shooting The Revenant, a 19th century set action thriller starring DiCaprio as a frontiersman on the path of vengeance against a group of people who left him for dead after a bear mauling.

It sounds straight forward enough but as the trailer suggests, it's far more than that. DiCaprio's trail of vengeance takes him across the barren, and from the looks of it, winter landscape where he encounters other frontiersmen and even a group of Indians. The story is inspired by the real life events of frontiersman Hugh Glass played here by DiCaprio.

The trailer is stunning and suggest Iñárritu and cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki have outdone themselves again. I got a The New World vibe from some of the images and that is never a bad thing.

The Revenant opens December 25.

Looks awesome. Along the lines of Jerimiah Johnson, but much more grit.
