Christopher Webster [Celluloid 11.02.15] book horror documentary

Filmmaker Cody Meirick's upcoming documentary, Scary Stories, will explore the legacy and infamy of probably the scariest reading experience of your childhood - Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.

Yes, the short stories that made up the first and second volumes were scary as shit by themselves, but it was the accompanying illustrations by Stephen Gammell that made this book such a dark and terrifying curio to many young kids perusing their local or school libraries.

Synopsis:
Scary Stories: A Documentary will explore the history and background of one of the most controversial works of modern children’s literature.

In the 1980s and 1990s in elementary libraries across the United States these books developed a growing interest from boys and girls who were taken in by the gothic tales, the whimsical tone, and the ghostly illustrations. Now the Scary Stories book series stands as the most challenged children’s book of the last 30 years and a testament to the power of something that is often taken for granted: a good scary story.

A feature length Scary Stories film has been in development for a while. Recently, screenwriter John August (Corpse Bride, Big Fish) was brought on for a page-one re-write.
