If it seems like forever since we last read any news on the "Altered Carbon" adaptation that was in the works, it's because it has been.

In mid 2009 it was reported that James McTeigue (of V for Vendetta fame) was in talks to direct an adaptation of Richard K. Morgan's novel but that project never materialized and considering today's announcement, that's probably for the best because rather than a movie, Morgan's cyberpunk world will now get a ten episode treatment care of Netflix.

Following up on their promise to deliver even more original content in 2016, Netflix has announced that they are moving ahead with this adaptation care of Laeta Kalogridis. Kalogridis, who is best known for co-writing Shutter Island and Terminator Genisys will showrun, write and executive produce.

Set in the 25th century where the human soul can be digitized and transferred from body to body, "Altered Carbon" tells the story of Takeshi Kovacs (AKA Envoy), an interstellar warrior who has been imprisoned for 500 years and who is downloaded into a new body. "If he can solve a single murder in a world where technology has made death nearly obsolete, he'll get a chance at a new life on Earth."

Considering this is the first book in a trilogy, it's quite possible that if the first season does well, we may get adaptations of the other two books in the trilogy. Fingers crossed. After all, who doesn't like a good dose of cyberpunk?
