It's always a little disconcerting when a movie kicks around the block for a few years before it finally sees the light of day. Sometimes its just logistics but in the case of horror movies, it seems that delay is usually connected with some degree of terribleness. That said, I'm not sure that's the case with The Devil's Candy.

Writer/director Sean Byrne's follow-up to the excellent The Loved Ones (review), The Devil's Candy originally premiered in 2015 at the Toronto International Film Festival before making its way through the horror movie festival circuit. We had our first look at the movie last year in the form of a terribly dubbed Russian trailer but a lot has changed in the last six months most notably the fact that the movie now has a distributor and a release date.

The Devil's Candy stars Ethan Embry (Cheap Thrills, The Guest) as Jesse, a struggling painter who finds new inspiration when he and his family move into their dream-house in rural Texas only to later discover that the place is haunted. Along with Embry, the movie also stars Shiri Appleby ("UnReal") and the always rather creepy Pruitt Taylor Vince.

A "haunted house" horror movie doesn't exactly spark excitement but I must admit that this total package of cast, director and this solid trailer have captured my interest.

The Devil's Candy will open theatrically in limited release and be available on VOD on March 17.
