Marina Antunes [Celluloid 04.26.18] scifi action drama

Directing brothers Josh and Jonathan Baker made the move from Australia to LA in 2007 and since landing, they've made a couple of short films but the pair is about to make the jump to the big leagues - or so they hope.

The duo's feature film debut is a sci-fi action drama called Kin. Relative newcomer Myles Truitt stars as a teen boy who finds a mysterious weapon in an abandoned building. His brother, played by Jack Reynor, has recently been released from prison and owes some bad people a bit of money and when he tries to make amends without the money in question, they try to exact some force. That is, until little brother Eli steps in with his fancy new weapon.

Now Eli and his brother are on the run from bad people who want the new technology and as if that's not enough, they're also being chased by the people who want their weapon back.

Kin also stars Dennis Quaid, James Franco, Zoe Kravitz and Carrie Coon.

The story is familiar enough but are the sci-fi trappings going to be enough for this to stand out? That remains to be seen; the effects certainly look good. For now, the main attraction to this project is the cast and the fact that this comes to us from the producers of Arrival and "Stranger Things." That definitely gives this a leg up.

Kin opens August 31.
