Marina Antunes [Celluloid 03.05.19] Sweden scifi drama

In the near future, the end of the Earth leads the remnants of society to make an escape from Earth to Mars on luxury transport ships which make the trip in three weeks. The Aniara is one of those ships except that partway through the flight, the ship gets knocked off course and the crew is left with one option: find a celestial body and leverage its gravity to get back on course. Trouble is, they don't know when they're going to encounter the necessary celestial body.

Adapted from Nobel Prize winner Harry Martinson's poem, Pella Kagerman and Hugo Lilja's feature film debut Aniara (teaser) follows the survivors aboard the Aniara and observes how this insular society deals with the knowledge that they may be floating in space for the indefinite future. Spoiler alert: it doesn't look like they're going to make it.

Stories about humanity at their worst are always fascinating and it'll be interesting to see how a different culture, in this case, a Swedish production, approaches what we've seen from Hollywood countless times though if the trailer is any indication, humanity's tendency for self-destruction is present across many cultures.

Aniara opens May 17.
