Marina Antunes [Celluloid 01.13.20] horror action vampires

It's rather appropriate that Jared Leto, who is nearly 50, is playing a vampire in the upcoming Morbius, mostly because I'm not convinced that he's NOT a vampire but alas, that is a discussion for a different day.

Directed by Daniel Espinosa (Easy Money, Safe House, Life) and adapted from the Marvel comic, Leto stars as Dr. Michael Morbius, a man afflicted with a rare blood disease. While trying to find a cure, he inadvertently infects himself with vampirism instead.

The movie also stars Jared Harris, J.K. Simmons, Matt Smith, Tyrese Gibson and Adria Arjona.

While Morbius may have started off in the comics as a rogue to Spider-Man, the character was eventually spun-off to lead his own series in which he portrayed a brooding, flawed anti-hero and I expect that this what the writing team of Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless are leaning into.

Leto can be good under the right circumstances and this character certainly plays into his strengths, namely the brooding anti-hero bit, and I expect he'll do well enough in the role. Espinosa has shown talent at directing action which is sure to be a central aspect of Morbius.

As this is playing outside the direct Marvel umbrella, I'm hopeful (but not holding my breath) that it will be a little darker than the average Marvel movie. As for if and how it fits into Sony's limited Marvel universe, one need look no further than Michael Keaton who makes an appearance in the trailer.

Morbius opens July 31.

It would be great to see something without the comedic interludes and all the back slapping buddies. Dark is great.
