quietearth [Celluloid 01.12.07] post apocalyptic



My first impression of this movie was that it reminded me of Luc Besson's "Le Dernier Combat": Another black and white silent film. The only information about the disaster we have is that it takes place after World War III.

The movie is set in a broken down industrial district. We see five distinct survivors who seem to be aimlessly trying to recreate some semblance of normality. Of the five survivors only one is a woman. She spends the majority of the movie clutching a doll as if she wants a baby of her own. They don't communicate through spoken language, only grunts.


The plot seemed very thin and directionless. Instead of delving into any action, the movie maintains a dark, desolate, plodding pace. I would call this an "arthouse" film, but there didn't seem to be any discernible theme or message, rather it simply portrayed 5 people trying to get by in this particular post apocalyptic vision of the future. I give this movie a 4 out of 10.
