quietearth [Celluloid 06.08.07] post apocalyptic movie trailer news

Ok folks, they just released the new I am Legend trailer tonight, starring Will Smith. This is based on Richard Matheson's novel of the same name, and is the third incarnation in movie form, the first two being The Last Man on Earth starring Vincent Price, and Omega Man starring Charleton Heston. The release date is set for December. Thanks to wilcoy for the heads up. Here's the setup:

"Robert Neville (Will Smith) is a brilliant scientist, but even he could not contain the terrible virus that was unstoppable, incurable, and man-made. Somehow immune, Neville is now the last human survivor in what is left of New York City and maybe the world. For three years, Neville has faithfully sent out daily radio messages, desperate to find any other survivors who might be out there. But he is not alone. Mutant victims of the plague—The Infected—lurk in the shadows…watching Neville’s every move…waiting for him to make a fatal mistake. Perhaps mankind’s last, best hope, Neville is driven by only one remaining mission: to find a way to reverse the effects of the virus using his own immune blood. But he knows he is outnumbered…and quickly running out of time."

Damn, as much as I love I Am Legend, and The Omega Man (haven't seen the other film), I have to say that this sounds like it's going to be typical hollywood tripe.

Shame.

Having seen all three of them, The Omega Man is still my favorite (plus I have fond childhood memories of it scaring the crap out of me). You can't beat ultra religious zombies with 'fros who fight "the user of the wheel", a trigger happy NRA card carrying Charlton Heston who shoots at anything which moves (no wonder he is the NRA president now). He also didn't have a wife and daughter like Price and Smith, which limited the flashbacks and took all pathos out of the story.

Actually John C. Sigler is the current NRA president, Heston stepped down in April 2003. I know, I'm a lifetime member :)
