Christopher Webster [Celluloid 02.04.08] movie apocalyptic news

Perhaps more than any other director working in genre cinema today M. Night Shyamalan has the propensity to create films that generate huge hype and then let about half of their viewers down. I think I was the only person who loved The Village but I loathed The Lady in the Water so you can imagine my trepidation now that, with his latest film The Happening, Shaymalan has decided to investigate our genre of choice around here at Quiet Earth.

After viewing this teaser over at AICN however I, once again, seem to have fallen under Shyamalan's spell and am getting all jazzed up about the film. It looks to be much more brutal than his previous work (perhaps in penance for his Lady in the Water misstep?) and I hope The Happening gets him back on track.

I loved both The Village and Lady in the Water, in fact I think M. Night has upped his game. I'm really looking forward to this one.

I loved the Village. I didn't hate Lady in the Water. It wasn't awesome, but I thought it was enjoyable. Maybe a 6.5/7 out of 10.
