Alright so I know that we don't cover tons of fantasy films around these parts and we're certainly not a home viewing news service but I'm just shocked that this release slipped past my ever watchful Criterion eye. In 1940, Micheal Powell's Arabian Nights fantasy epic, The Thief of Bagdad, was a Technicolor marvel and waayy ahead of its time in terms of technical wizardry so I'm really looking forward to devouring this release come May. Trailer and amazing 2-disc specs after the jump.

Basically, the Thief of Bagdad inspired a whole generation of young directors and FX wizards, from George Lucas to Ray Bradbury, so I'm not surprised to report that this set will include no less than two commentaries; one with directors Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorsese and the other with academic film connoisseur Bruce Eder. You can also expect some choice FX interviews with the likes of Ray Harryhausen and Dennis Muren as well as the inclusion of producer Alexander Korda's largely unseen propaganda short The Lion Has Wings.

Cool no?
