Christopher Webster [Celluloid 10.30.08] post apocalyptic movie news

In theory, news of a large scale adaptation of "The Book of Eli" should have brought joy to the entire QE team followed by a declaration of a new national holiday and maybe even a BBQ. But nope, we stand divided on the involvement of Denzel Washington as both star and producer. Some worry The Book of Eli will turn into another Postman (i.e well made but overly sanctimonious), while others believe Washington brings a little gravitas to PA genre. Now that Gary Oldman's joined the cast though, I'm happy to report that we're all on speaking terms again.

But wait, it gets even better. According to Variety, Oldman will play the film's villain, a "despot of a small and pathetic town, who’s determined to get a hold of Eli’s book." Oldman certainly plays bad good... wait, does that make sense...and It'll be great to see him back to his old sneering evil self a la The Professional, True Romance, or Fifth Element. The Book of Eli is currently aiming for a release date of January 15th, 2010.
