So we've been calling it Island of the Dead but apparently that hasn't been finalized. Regardless, our friends over at Dread Central got their hands on the flyer art for Romero's next which is apparently being labeled ... of the Dead.
Furthermore, Fangoria is reporting that this is going to be a "western" zombie flick, and apparently he's taking cues from The Big Country where Stetson-wearing cowboys and grizzled farmhands shoot Winchester rifles—aiming, of course, for the head. Also, reportedly only one character from Diary has been tied into this new story. This would be Alan Van Sprang, who reprises his brief role as Nicholas “Nicotine†Crocket, a renegade member of the National Guard, but in this new film he plays a reluctant quas-hero who smokes alot and rallies the people to stop the zombies.
"Romero is fashioning a kind of mini-epic of modern-day zombie mayhem, liberally ladled with large doses of gritty Wild West style and attitude. Set in an island off the east coast of North America, Romero’s script details the conflicts between two warring rural families (à la the Hatfields and the McCoys), engaged in an escalating battle, with the ever-multiplying hordes of flesheaters akin to the kids caught in the middle. “The juxtaposition of the cowboys and the zombies is interesting,†executive producer and longtime Romero collaborator Peter Grunwald tells Fango. “This is a Western set in this made-up George Romero world.â€
The film is supposed to wrap early November, and like last time, I'm sure it will be over a year before we get to see a bloody trailer, argh! Art after the break.
UPDATED WITH PLOT:
"On a small island off the cost of North America the Dead Rise ot menace the living. The islanders cant bring themselves to eterminate the loir loves ones despite the growing danger fro those they once held dear. A rebel among them hunts down all the zombies he can find only to be banished from the island for assassinating his neighbors and friends.
On the mainland, bent on revenge, he encounters a small band of Survivors in search of an oasis on which to build a new life. Barely surviving an attack from a mass of ravenous flesh eaters they commandeer a zombie infested ferry and sail to the island. There to their horor they discover that the locals have chained the dead inside their homes pretending to live 'normal lives' with bloody consequences.
What ensues is a desperate struggle for survival and the answer to question never posed in Romeros dead films.. can the living ever live in peace with the dead?"

So a 'western' type zombie movie? Well it wont be the first one, though Undead of Alive seemed more like a fubnny throwback to the old spaghetti-westerns.

"hack" of the dead?

The answer to the question is no. And zombie movies have more than anything argued the living can't live in peace with the living either.
