When French director Michele Gondry isn't taking mundane life and twisting it into whimsical fairy tales a la Science of Sleep or Be Kind Rewind he's making documentaries on the sly. Not exactly Dave Chappelle's Block Party however, The Thorn in the Heart looks to be much more of a personal journey for Gondry, retracing his roots through the story of his Aunt.

Suzette, Michel Gondry's aunt, was a school teacher from 1952 to 1986 and she tells Michel how it was to be a teacher back then in a rural and isolated part of France. But little by little, Michel discovers some family stories he was totally unaware of and uses his camera to explore it in a subtle but very emotional way.

The Thorn in the Hearth is premiering at Cannes but is not in competition. After the break are the first images from the film. Most of them feature Gondry just stone cold chillin' with his family, eating, drinking, you know, being French. Perhaps not the most action packed thing you'll see this week but as a massive fan of Gondry's consistently imaginative work I'm looking forward to see the film.

This looks lovely! I wish I could be at the Cannes solely to watch this piece of art. I hope its released on DVD soon.
