An interesting array of genre titles hit home video this week including the long awaited release of Howard McCain's outrageous Vikings vs. Alien flick, Outlander, coming from Weinstein Company. The theatrical mis-treatment of this film caused a bit of a fanboy furor so it'll be interesting to see how well it does on home video.

Speaking of fanboys, Kyle Newman's loving ode to the Star Wars generation, Fanboys, which is also arriving courtesy of Weinstein Company, drops today. Loaded with inside jokes that only someone with too many 12 inch action figures would truly find endearing, Fanboys may not have been the comedy of the year, but it sure took me back to 1999 when, as a complete Star Wars freak, there was only one film that really mattered.

Coming from Magnet Releasing this week is a film that truly brings a tear to my eye when I think of how great it could have been, but just isn't. That film is, of course, Franck Vestiel's Eden Log an intriguing but not at all entertaining French scifi film about a man who wakes up with no memory in an underground city that's been destroyed and is now crawling with monsters. Eden Log may look beautiful but it is a textbook case of missed opportunity. It had the potential to be a post-apocalyptic Dark City crossed with Memento and The Descent, but ended up being a plodding, pretentious, piece of crap (which is why I decided not to endorse the film too strongly by leading this post with it). Of course that's just my opinion.

On the horror front we've got some interesting titles as well. Lionsgate's My Bloody Valentine 3D (review here) is out and, lo and behold, the 3D works pretty darn good in the home environment. Also out this week is an interesting British horror film called Bane which has been described as torture porn meets the Twilight Zone. While not much for the straight up torture porn genre, the word on Bane is that it's got brains so I'll probably be checking this one out. Coming from Anchor Bay this week is also Michael Bafaro's Devil's Ground.

On the tv front, the first season of HBO's vampire drama, True Blood, is finally out this week. For some strange reason, the boxed set is reasonably priced ($32.99 on Amazon), something extremely uncharacteristic for HBO boxed sets. Season two starts in June. Can't wait.
