I'm actually surprised it took this long for a reality show like this to hit the airwaves. At any rate, I'll take Discovery's The Colony over Survivor any day. Of course the big question is, will they be given a means to defend themselves from mutant marauders?

Synopsis:
The Colony is a controlled experiment to see exactly what it would take to survive and rebuild under these circumstances. For 10 weeks, a group of 10 volunteers, whose backgrounds and expertise represent a cross-section of modern society, are isolated in an urban environment outside Los Angeles and tasked with creating a livable society.

With no electricity from the grid, no running water and no communication with the outside world, all the volunteers have to work with are their skills and whatever tools and supplies they can scavenge from their surroundings.

The Colony premieres on Discovery on July July 21, 2009. For more info check out the official website.

Thanks to mremeto for the heads up!

The premise is flawed: 10 people can't rebuild society, it doesn't matter what their skills or resources are, because society isn't 10 weeks long, it's thousands of weeks long.

Perhaps you don't understand the meaning of "experiment"

Perhaps you don't understand that what it's claiming to test and what it's capable of testing are not the same things. Can 10 people live together for 10 weeks? Sure. Can they survive on carefully selected and placed resources? Yes. Can they relocate to a better environment? No. Can they actually die within the definitions of the 'experiment'? No. Will the women be raped and the men killed by rival groups? No. Will they be allowed to suffer malnutrition, infections, etc? No. Will they have to reproduce and educate a new generation? No. Will they have to worry about repercussions 6 months down the line? No. Will they be able to bring in other refugees, contact other groups, or expel members? Unlikely.

I also have to question the wisdom of setting it in an urban or suburban/industrial area. When you're talking about restarting at a below-subsistence farming level, the wisest strategy would be to load up on as many supplies as you can and head for a fertile patch of land away from gangs and industrial decay.

Okay, regarding the experimental value of the show, it is completely pointless. We all know that despite its claims it is, in reality, just another piece of tosh reality tv justifying itself with flimsy pretences. That being said, I'm really going to enjoy watching it.

Maybe they will be forced to resort to cannibalism.

Maybe we can dress up as crazed marauders and invade the set.

The premise of the show is a very interesting one but without a much longer "season" the experiment will not gain enough information. There will never be a reality show that truly shows what it would be like to live in a post apocalyptic world since the masses would not be able to deal with the gravity of it.

Just remember it is just tv for now. mostly just to entertain us. and, duh!, you can't get it figured out in 10 weeks, but i's fun to watch!!

"to bad they dont have a show like this but with zombies, that would be cool" watch DEAD SET big brother with zombies.. watching them getting eaten was fun. looks like a cool show.

Agreed with rek. A post apocalyptic world isn't something you can efficiently simulate. The best you can do is contemplate such a thing theoretically.

If you want to know about this stuff for real, go to www.zombiehunters.org and use the forum boards. We talk about this on the internet.

It would be cool if they could make this a hidden camera show where the people dont know that its not real and have them live there for a few years but i think thats illegal

Apparently a lot of people don't know the meaning of control experiment, which is what this is.

This show freakin rocks, despite its obvious flaws. I think it rules over most entertainment on television today. Well, actually Dicovery and NatGeo pretty much are the best there is.

The show is pretty good. I have to call B.S. on some things though. If this were truly a viral outbreak like they said, they would have to deal with hundreds of not thousands of bodies.

Also, I gotta call BS on the lock pick thing. A door to a warehouse like that would have been deadbolted and I doubt he would have gotten in that easily. The best lockpick is a sledge hammer. I think they would have used that.

I think this show is cool, but as I watch I can't help but to keep thinking about the
people filming in the backround, have they
helped with the expitments.

I don't know about you Permalink, but after watching this show. I learned a lot of stuff that could help me if this ever happened. So it may be a reality show, but its also on Discovery Channel and I learned something from it!

It's OK to watch from the standpoint of entertainment and learning how to improvise and make some things that work (or are functional), to some degree again. These can be helpfulin general. However, any person schooled in survival, of any degree, realizes that firearms are a big part of this sort of equation. The first thing early man HAD to develop was a survival sense, and that quickly lead to having a deadly weapon close at hand. Even people who HATE guns start looking for an equalizer when the chips are down. It's a real simple formula at that point, live..........or die.

Now, aside from that, there are plenty of other serious weapons that would be in play, and cause death and/or serious injury leading to death. So in this regard, the show is merely an exercise in mental masturbation. Of course the producers cannot take reality to that serious a level.

Bottom line, don't put any stock in this show from a true survival standpoint. Any survivors of a major disaster, that were legally incarcerated. and now free would have these people as a light snack. In true times of this sort, these are the people who come to the fore, savages. And if you aren't prepared, or able to deal with them on their level, you're gone. Realize that fact and deal with it.

Im wondering about the rules of engagement. Granted its just a show but I see a lot of opportunity to take out people. And not have to deal with them in a nice manner.

@Satori: I agree about the opportunities to take out people. Especially when the couple came in and stole things from the colony and the last episode when several people should have been beaten down in the cage (even if they pretty much went into the trap voluntarily). I loved the first season simply because of the wacky hippy/vegitarian Dr Ney the Science guy and the self proclaimed "big monkey". The rocket scientist and two other engineers were were worthless to the group.

I think this show would be alot better if they let the participants use air soft guns. I know it isnt the same as real weapons but it would still get the point across as to "I just shot you, because you were trying to steal my Beanie Weenies". Just saying. They could put a disclaimer at the beginning of the show saying that the guns arent real, but the outcome such as them pretending to die and then being off the show would be. Zombie apocolypse would be epic. It could be called "Holy shit, there are Zobies everywhere and all we get are these shitty air soft guns!!"
