Christopher Webster [Celluloid 07.13.09] Tuvalu post apocalyptic movie news book scifi

[Editor's note: Look, we all know this is going to be horrendous like almost every other King adaptation, not to mention how are they going to pull off the necessary violence and gore on TV? Cable? It's a good story, but seriously, it was poorly written. King has fallen off. Without a good director, this will be ****!]

Fangoria have an interesting report from Montreal’s Fantasia film festival. John Harrison, whose Clive Barker-based feature BOOK OF BLOOD is premiering at the event, is apparently writing a four-hour miniseries based on Stephen King’s CELL.

Word is that Harrison (who btw, also adapted DUNE into a four part series for SCIFI back in 2000 and is acting as producer on the forthcoming feature length DUNE) is currently scripting the adaptation of CELL for the Weinstein Company who still own the rights, but who have abandoned the idea of a feature and want to shop it around to TV networks. Personally, I loved CELL (despite the silly ending) and the idea of hard-edged PA mini-series sounds awesome. At least we know it couldn't be worse that The Stand mini-series from 1994.

So, I guess this means Eli Roth is definitely off the project then. Too bad really, I thought he had some decent ideas.

Roth is definitely off the project, he recently said in an interview that he quietly departed CELL a while back.

Well, it sounds like he's serious about doing that giant monster film "Endangered Species" this fall with "Thanksgiving" to follow as he seems to be dropping previously announced projects left and right.

It's a very atmospheric book until it gets all silly near the end. Would be interesting to see what they can do with it.

You guys didn't think the Stand mini series wasn't awesome?? Yeah, this will be crap too. Get someone good (Del Toro) to do a Lord of the Rings type series for the Dark Tower books or even a nice little film version of The Long Walk.

The Stand is alright but doesn't hold a candle to the book.

The guys form LOST are on the Dark Tower series right now which could be cool, but yeah The Long Walk NEEDS to be made... preferably by Frank Darabont who seems to be the only director capable of making a decent, large scale King adaptation.

The movie adaptation of The Stand was an absolute abortion! Molly Ringwald as Fran Goldsmith? C'mon! I still shake my head every time I think of that movie. Probably because it's my favorite King book. I don't hold out much hope for The Cell, but I guess it remains to be seen.

maximum overdrive rules!

The Master Stephen King is an excellent director, who is more than worthy of directing all film adaptations of his works. Hes the fucking shit, works of his caliber deserve nothing but point to point adaptations.

The Stand being awesome was a joke. A poor joke, but still a joke and was pretty much an abortion as Anonymous so poetically put it. As for the guys from LOST doing The Dark Tower, thank god someone finally seen fit to try to adapt it to film. If done right it could be big. P.A. and cowboys...Hell Yeah!
