Christopher Webster [Celluloid 12.16.09] movie news

Looking over the team's top-five of 2009 lists today it struck me what a diverse year for genre cinema it was. Oh sure, there are certain titles that managed to make it onto almost everyone's lists (MOON and Antichrist being two clear winners), but, put together, the titles run the gamut of film styles - like the best film festival program you could image.

I certainly didn't think I'd see films like The Hangover bumping up against The Road, or a double bill of Ursula Meiers' French oddity, Home, and Stingray Sam, but it's all just too cool of a mash-up to ignore and I may have to program a little private festival of some of these titles for viewing over the holidays.

But anyway, sit back, grab a drink, peruse the lists and refresh your memory of all the films you should be netflixing, buying or borrowing in the new year. Oh yeah, and be sure to drop us your own personal 2009 best-of lists in the comments section.

Read all the top five lists after the break.

No love for Pontypool?

Mike White (12 years ago) Reply

I think Pontypool could be counted as 2008 since in was at the Toronto Film Fest that year.

I saw PONTYPOOL last year so it didn't manage to get on this year's list. It's a great selection - good call Nathan.

anonymous: you think these flicks play every night in all theaters? the genre flicks I saw this year were all fest-shown or "screeners" I received thanx to QE. You are quite the critical commentator... why not join us as a reviewer?'

Liking all the Love for ENTER THE VOID. (And the lone mention for the charming Soul Kitchen)

I anxiously await getting my grubby little hand on the Stanislaw Lem adaptation "1"

Upon reading the list I decided to watch Antichrist and I´m still wondering how come the movie is in the top 5 of so many reviewers. Boring, unscary, thriving too much to look artsy, easy the worst movie of the year in my opinion. Looking forward to Moon though.
