Christopher Webster [Celluloid 10.05.10] trailer horror comedy

John Landis' new black comedy, Burke & Hare, reminds me a lot of Glenn McQuaid's brilliant I Sell the Dead - but without the zombies.

Landis' film is is a comedic take on the true story of the 1828 Edinburgh body-snatchers William Burke (played here by Simon Pegg) and William Hare (Andy Serkis). These two Irish entrepreneurs, spurred on by a chance meeting with a gorgeous actress (Isla Fisher), discover that a dead body can fetch a hefty price when the demands of the leading medical professors Dr. Knox (Tom Wilkinson) and Dr. Monroe (Tim Curry) reach beyond that of the local supply.

Tonally the film is almost too wacky. Is a bucket of poop on the head still funny? I guess it's true that tragedy plus time equals comedy.

That's really disappointing. I had high hopes for this - being a fan of both lead actors - but this looks really lame.

Can't believe they managed to reduce Burke & Hare to the level of American Pie and its ilk.

Hopefully the trailer is misleading and the film will turn out better, but this has put me off rushing out to the cinema to see it.

Yeah, same here. Hmm. Trailers have been known to be misleading though. Let's hope for that.

Great cast. shame about the rest of the film. Terrible accents and a complete rip off of I Sell The Dead.

The Burke and Hare movie is a comedy and doesn’t portray the real story of their crimes. It’s a shame really as Landis had an opportunity to do a good movie about the real Burke and Hare and wasted it. I thought the Burke and Hare documentary was a lot better tbh.

If anyone is interested in the documentary it is called Burke and Hare the Body Merchants.
