Marina Antunes [Celluloid 04.07.11] movie trailer news action drama

The formalities aren’t many but here they are anyways. Warrior stars Tom Hardy (of Bronson and Inception fame among many other titles) and Joel Edgerton (of Animal Kingdom fame) as his brother, both of whom are MMA fighters. Along with the leads, the film also stars Nick Nolte (looking better than he has in years) and Jennifer Morrison and is directed by Gavin O'Connor who previously directed the mediocre Pride and Glory. Thankfully this looks much, much better than his previous outing behind the camera.

Here’s the official synopsis:

An ex-Marine haunted by a tragic past, Tommy Conlon (Tom Hardy) returns to his hometown of Pittsburgh and enlists his father, a recovered alcoholic and his former coach, to train him for an MMA tournament awarding the biggest purse in the history of the sport. As Tommy blazes a violent path towards the title prize, his brother, Brendan, (Joel Edgerton) a former MMA fighter unable to make ends meet as a public school teacher, returns to the amateur ring to provide for his family after being suspended from his day job. Even though years have passed, recriminations and betrayals keep Brendan bitterly estranged from both Tommy and his father.

But when Brendan's unlikely rise as an underdog sets him on a collision course with Tommy, the two brothers must finally confront the forces that tore them apart, all the while waging the most intense, winner-takes-all battle of their lives.

Admitedly the trailer plays the sappy drama angle complete with awful cheesy trailer music but that doesn't detract from the fact that it looks solid (as does Hardy. Good god the man is built). Warrior was already very high on my most anticipated list of fall releases and I was thrilled to see a number of positive reviews of the film coming out of a screening last week at CinemaCon. The film hits theatres on September 9th. Read: not soon enough.

Trailer after the break.

That does look pretty good. You're right, a bit too much drama played up in the trailer, but I won't hold that against it.

Also, if there's ever a movie about Chael Sonnen's life, and there is one there, this dude is just about the spitting image of him.

What's with the big stupid WWF bodyslam, a movie about mma should have grit, not this sappy glossy rubbish.
it looks so generic. too much hollywood.
