Everyone's going Mortal Kombat crazy now that the new Mortal Kombat web series has premiered, so I'm not surprised to see these Blu-ray releases timed accordingly. Paul WS. Anderson's 1995 Mortal Kombat was fairly corny even back in 1995, but it was extremely popular and epitomizes a 90s tone with its reliance on practical FX and techno-heavy score. It's little brother, the sequel Mortal Kombat: Annihilation also hits Blu-ray along with an all new edition to the video game series.

Also out this week is IP Man 2 starring the great Donnie Yen as the real-life kung fu Grandmaster who is widely known as the man who brought Wing Chun to the world with the help of his star pupil, Bruce Lee. The first film was stellar, so I'm looking forward to this one.

Goemon is from Casshern director Kazuaki Kiriya so you can just image how cool this movie looks. The Crystal Ferret slammed it in his review from L'Etrange '09, but I've heard if you turn your brain off this one's pretty dang fun.

And finally we've got Peter Weir's The Way Back hitting DVD and Blu-ray this week. This one stars Ed Harris, Jim Sturgess, Saoirse Ronan and Colin Farrell and is an epic saga of survival inspired by an incredible true story. The film begins in 1940 when seven prisoners attempt the impossible: escape from a brutal Siberian gulag. A treacherous 4,500-mile trek to freedom across the world's most merciless landscapes await them. I've loved Weir's work since I first saw Picnic at Hanging Rock, so for me this is a must see.
