Christopher Webster [Celluloid 05.03.11] movie news short scifi horror video thriller

For new directors looking to get a feature off the ground it's almost become standard practice to first make a short, or trailer to prove you've got what it takes to make a compelling flick. This is exactly what writer/director, Seda, was faced with before getting to work on Subject 7.

Designed as a prequel to his forthcoming feature film Subject 6, the short, gritty science fiction flick gives us a glimpse into the horrible experiment world that a group of humans find themselves a part of. Think Dark City meets Cube. You can see why we're excited here.

We caught up with Seda - who was kind enough to let us bring you guys an exclusive first look at the film - over email and he told us a bit more about this early look at the larger project:

"A prequel approach gave me the opportunity to explore the moments before the subjects are put into the rooms (something the feature doesn't explore) and the early stages of the experiment," said Seda. "In Subject 7 we see how early methods of subject containment are crude, unformed and largely ineffective. In the feature, we'll see the methods of whoever these captors are have evolved and are now highly effective."

About what the story of his feature means in a larger context, Seda said; "I feel like the story is a parable for modern culture and how so much of the information that we are imparted with at a very young age is actually very biased, serving to create a false sense of understanding about the world around us. Our cultural obsession with “reality” TV fosters a desire to be the center of attention as if when nobody is watching our lives somehow have less meaning. We're born into our family’s ideologies and values, and then on a larger scale our state or our country's. We are formed by the ideas of others without ever really exploring other views and discovering their own beliefs. That's the metaphorical prison that the feature explores - the prison of a limited mind constraining an unlimited spirit."

Go ahead and watch Subject 7 after the break and be sure to share your thoughts in the comments section!

Sealed in an isolation room under constant surveillance, a psychology student, believing she's a paid participant in a month-long behavioral study, starts to believe she's actually a prisoner who must escape before she loses her mind.

Wow wow. If this is what Seda can do with 8 minutes then I can't wait to see the feature. By the way, I love the idea of making the short a little prequel movie whole unto itself.

Looks great. Really like the lighting in this one. I think that's where you see real talent in the movies, the way they light it.
