Marina Antunes [Celluloid 05.30.11] movie trailer news scifi

The first trailer for Ben Carland's sci-fi drama SOL left us thinking that a group of kids were lost on some mysterious island with no way of getting home. I loved the visuals and music of the trailer and the fact that the story seemed to focus almost exclusively on the human drama.

It's been nearly a year since that trailer made its way online and since then, work has wrapped on the production and the search for distribution has started bringing with it a new trailer for the film which adds some new layers to the story, namely that this is some sort of competition that has gone horribly wrong. The new trailer features mostly new material and is much more straightforward than the teaser and like a good trailer, leaves many more questions than answers; I certainly want to know what "those things" are and what they do.

Again, this new trailer shows off some gorgeous cinematography and a fantastic score by Alex Davis and though I'm not really liking the "on camera" effect, I'm still very excited to see the finished product.

If you're looking for more, there are loads of breathtaking stills and production photos on the film’s official website.

Trailer after the break.

Looks like a cross between Lord of the Flies and Battle Royale, with a bit of Blair Witch Project. I want to be impressed but I think this will turn out to be pretty generic.

There's something about the premise – a group of people suddenly stranded, forced to assess their surroundings and make do with whatever supplies they happened to have on their persons – that I love. Judging from the electrical activity at the start, I'd say it's teleportation gone wrong.

Don't love the on-screen recording doo-dads though; the audience knows there's a camera present, we don't need to be reminded.
